A wrongful death lawsuit against the operators of the Piedmont Regional Jail near Farmville has been settled for $350,000.
U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson in Richmond approved the settlement this morning. He said it was in the best interests of all parties.
The lawsuit seeking unspecified damages was filed by the family of Guido Newbrough, an immigration detainee who died at the jail in 2008. According to autopsy reports, the 48-year-old Newbrough had an untreated bacterial infection and died of organ failure.
The complaint alleged that jail officials ignored or denied Newbrough's repeated pleas for medical attention. It also said shoddy medical care at the Piedmont Regional Jail had been well documented by media reports and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The defendants admitted no liability in the settlement agreement.
